What does “BL. SM.” mean on a Sanborn map?

BL. SM. is one of the ways a Sanborn surveyor lettered blacksmith / wagon works onto a building footprint. Sanborn abbreviated hard, because the words had to fit inside the building.

How it appears on the sheet

BL. SM. BLKSM. SMITH SHOP WAGON WKS.

Small building with forge marked, often on an alley behind a main street.

Why people look for it

A pre-automobile use that frequently became an auto garage on later sheets. That is a reason to read the sequence of editions rather than one sheet, and to ask an environmental professional what it means for your transaction — not a finding about any property.
