What does “PAINTS” mean on a Sanborn map?

PAINTS is one of the ways a Sanborn surveyor lettered paint, varnish, oil and chemical storage onto a building footprint. Sanborn abbreviated hard, because the words had to fit inside the building.

How it appears on the sheet

PAINTS VARNISH OIL OIL TANKS CHEMICALS TURPENTINE

Storehouses annotated with the stored commodity, sometimes with tank diagrams and capacities.

Why people look for it

Bulk solvent and oil storage is a documented historical use category. That is a reason to read the sequence of editions rather than one sheet, and to ask an environmental professional what it means for your transaction — not a finding about any property.
