What does “TANNERY” mean on a Sanborn map?

TANNERY is one of the ways a Sanborn surveyor lettered tannery onto a building footprint. Sanborn abbreviated hard, because the words had to fit inside the building.

How it appears on the sheet

TANNERY HIDES CURRYING

Vat rows drawn as grids, drying lofts with louvred walls.

Why people look for it

Tanning chemistries appear in historical use discussions. That is a reason to read the sequence of editions rather than one sheet, and to ask an environmental professional what it means for your transaction — not a finding about any property.
